Is it safe to rent from strangers?

We layer identity verification, reviews, photos, deposits, and dispute resolution.

RentNeighbors is built around several safety mechanisms:

  • Identity verification. Every renter goes through Stripe Identity (selfie + government ID) before their first booking. Owners do KYC through Stripe Connect to receive payouts.
  • Reviews. Both sides leave 1-5 star reviews after every rental. They're public on profiles and listings.
  • Check-in/check-out photos. Every rental requires both parties to upload condition photos before payment is captured/refunded. This protects against false damage claims.
  • Security deposits. Most owners set a deposit. It's authorized at booking and refunded on a clean check-out.
  • Disputes. If something goes wrong, file a dispute. Our team reviews evidence from both sides.
  • Reports. Anything sketchy can be reported. Repeat offenders get suspended.

That said: it's still a peer-to-peer platform. Use common sense. Meet in well-lit public places when possible, especially for higher-value items. Don't share your home address until the rental is approved.
